Understanding the Course
The Practice Certificate in Pharmacy Management is a distance learning course intended for anyone who has, or who aspires to, a managerial role as a pharmacist.
This business management course is accredited by Medway School of Pharmacy and is included in its Short Course Pathway. The course is supported by an educational grant from McNeil Products Ltd.
The Practice Certificate in Pharmacy Management comes in two parts, each of five Modules.
Course content
The content is framed in four domains: The Team, The Individual, The Structures and The Task.
This format allows for an appreciation of how community pharmacy, primary care and the NHS functions managerially, and how pharmacists working within these structures can manager better.
These four domains interact with each other in a dynamic fashion. It is the skill of the manager to identify where he or she must place emphasis on a day-to-day basis.
The Team
The team is the group of individuals (including the manager) who carry out the tasks that make an organisation work. It might be the staff of a community pharmacy, a head office or the management board of a primary care organisation.
Topics under this domain are covered in:
Module 1.1 - Building the Team
Module 1.2 - Leadership and Communication
The Individual
Managers require a range of skills to ensure they function effectively in the workplace. These include time management, negotiation skills and continuing professional development.
Topics under this domain are covered in:
Module 1.3 - Managing Yourself
The Structures
Organisations require structure to function effectively. Structures constantly change to meet new and evolving challenges. Structures are controlled by rules and regulations and sometimes by the law.
Topics under this domain are covered by:
Module 1.4 – Corporate Governance
Module 1.5 - Communication in organisations
The Task
The Task is the thing you, and those you are responsible for (your staff), do.
Topics under this domain are covered in Part 2 of the course:
Module 2.1 – SoPs and Audit
Module 2.2 – Managing Risks and Solving Problems
