A Guide to Getting Started with MURs

So you want to start providing an MUR service. What do you need to know?

Well, the first thing to bear in mind is that only accredited pharmacists can conduct MURs. Several courses are available, but for more information on the C+D/Medway School of Pharmacy distance learning course, click here.

The second consideration is that MURs can only be provided from accredited premises.
MURs need to take place in a private environment, so a consultation area is essential.

To meet the accreditation requirements, the area must be large and well equipped enough for both the pharmacist and patient to sit down together, sufficiently private so their conversation cannot be overheard, and clearly marked as a consultation area.

You may also find it useful – though it is not essential – to also put in a table and space for a computer terminal, and maybe a sink for handwashing. You could also fit the new wall space with leaflet holders and stock relevant leaflets in them, or simply display useful posters promoting your other services or healthy living messages.

The premises accreditation process is much simpler than that for pharmacists: contractors can self-certify to their PCT that they have such a facility to provide MURs.

The PCT can and will check it as part of its contract monitoring arrangements, so make sure your consultation area is kept up to scratch, and avoid the temptation to use it as an extra stock room.

Many PCTs produce their own premises accreditation form. If not, you can use the PSNC self-certification form, available here.

Once pharmacist and premises are accredited (and you’ve proved this to your PCT by submitting your premises form and a copy of your certificate of accreditation), you can start preparing to provide an MUR service.
