You shouldn't have been offered the service as it is for patients on long-term conditions- e.g. asthma or COPD. The pharmacist should have asked you first if you were using the salbutamol for asthma prior to getting your consent for the service.

the pharmacist should not have signed up for the nms at this stage as it is not confirmed that patient has asthma.he should contact GP TO CONFIRM DIAGNOSIS FOR ASTHMA.

I'm glad some else noticed this faux-par too.

It's critical that we do our best to deliver this service correctly and to the defined categories of patients.

never mind, perhaps the pharmacy won't complete their 20% target, and it won't have cost the NHS a penny, but a patient got excellent service :-)

Allergen -related does not mean Asthmatic.therefore no need for NMS. Pls go back to the pharmacist and ask him not to claim for this wasted consultation . By the way, i hope he/she showed you the correct technique of inhaler use !

I pay for training from the C & D and am completing the various NMS modules. The tarrif and psnc site have a constant "big brother" feel about them and thus I am disappointed that this "blog" seems based on a spurious starting point. This patient doesnt seem to be in the "asthma" category. Wouldn't this be considered a fraudulent claim?

I can understand the pharmacist offering NMS because as typical community pharmacists have very little information regarding a patient to work with. The pharmacist has clearly jumped to the conclusion this patient is asthmatic (which is a long term condition) I have a target to meet get them signed up. The symptoms being presented to the GP sound like an allergy and without knowing what Isobel has already tried I would have thought a the beclomethasone spray and a once daily antihistamine would have been a more appropriate prescription at this stage especially as Isobel does not mention any spirometry checks.

Hi all, thank you for the point you raised in response to my blog. I have since gone back to the pharmacist who conducted the appointment and he has agreed that it shall not be considered as an NMS consultation as I have not been diagnosed with asthma and will instead just be seen as a review.

It was a great idea to view the NMS experience from a patient perspective. It did not quite work out but C + D should try it again, if the opportunity arises.

Unfortunately after writing this blog it transpired that my appointment should not have counted as an NMS consulation.
