Ethical Dilemma: Pre-reg competency

You are the pharmacist at a small independent pharmacy, working in a small team with another pharmacist, their pre-reg trainee, and four staff. Over the past months, you have become increasingly worried about the pre-reg trainee's attitude.

They are often late, spend a lot of time chatting rather than working, and seem to lack basic clinical knowledge. In your opinion, the trainee is not competent to join the register and have mentioned this to their tutor.

Shortly before their final assessment, you chat to the tutor, who tells you that while he understands your concerns, in his opinion the trainee is satisfactory. What action would you take?

The best suggestions will be printed in C+D, along with expert legal advice on what the consequences of your choices could be.

I would suggest the best thing to be what you would do for any poorly performing staff member - record details of the occassions where the behaviour is less than nyou would expect and, with the evidence to hand, speak to the tutor. If there is no change in the tutor's approach - and you would hope that, at the very least, they would have a chat to the pre-reg, just to get their side of the story, as well as other members of staff, you could always contact the GPhC, as a last resort. That would, however, cast a shadow over the tutor and may create further problems

The Pharmacist is right by having a chat with the Tutor expressing his concerns over the Pre-reg Trainee.According to GPhc guidelines the Tutor is responsible for the clinical knowledge, attendence and the conduct of the pre reg trainee in the pharmacy.Should the tutor ignore the concerns of his fellow pharmacist, then the pharmacist in question could report to Gphc depending on the severity of the matter.i would personally take those concerns on board and have a chat with the pre reg and see whether a change of attitude to work is forthcoming.I hope the trainee picks up clinical knowledge by regularly carrying out CPD work.It will be mandatory once he is on the register.
