Daylight robbery?

On the one hand: retail theft is soaring and, according to the British Retail Consortium Retail Crime Survey 2011, pharmacies have been particularly badly hit. Why? Lower staffing levels, longer opening hours and the fact that burglars nick ibuprofen to treat their occupational back strain (I made that last one up).

And on the other:  I was in a pharmacy not long ago and overheard the pharmacist dealing with a man who had conjunctivitis.

Yes, of course, he could buy some chloramphenicol drops. But did he know they were running a three-for-two promotion that weekend? So if he bought some Echinacea to, "Help fight off the infection", he could get a free supply of vitamins, "To build up your immunity"?

Which begs the question, who is robbing who, exactly?

I'm amazed the pharmacist had time to discuss vitamins - having ascertained that chloramphenicol was appropriate, I would have handed over to an assistant and returned to something that actually needed my attention...

So hospital consultants never refer patients to their private practice? Who is robbing who exactly?

Dr Livingstone, please note selling vitamins and at the same time giving professional advice on conjunctivitis is all part of business skill it is certainly not a daylight robbery. We are pharmacist and also businessman and we have to learn to survive in this harsh economic climate. There is nothing wrong in recomending vitamins if the pharmacist thought would benefit the customer in question.

I just received an script signed by a "GP" for "Spongia Tosta" (http://abchomeopathy.com/r.php/Spong).

Not satisfied with robbing the NHS with their out of hours fees, we're expected to pay for this.....
