LPC chair calls for national menu of pharmacy services

A national list of core enhanced services for community pharmacy is required and in line with what I have suggested in the past and streamilining of national accreditation would be a requirement to build the capacity in the pharmacy workforce to deliver them to a high standard. Don't forget good remuneration that is easily understood rather than a web of hoops, whistles and bells set in different zones!

I made a similar comment on 27 April. Just as GPs have a national tariff or price for each epsiode of care so we need a national pricing structure to ensure our services are not under valued and are remunerated fairly!

The total payment made by pharmacy contractors in England for the LPC Statutory Levy
for the financial year April 2010 - March 2011 was £9,274,946.32 of which £3m went to PSNC.

In a lot of cases all contractors have to show for it are services being decommissioned and the NMS payments fiasco! PSNC really need to up their game or pharmacy will loose out!

Streamlining of accreditation has been a bee in my bonnet for longer than I care to remember. Last year I worked as a locum in 10 different PCT's all of which have their own criteria for services and evening or whole day training programmes to attend, that is just not viable. Even if we had a national minor ailment scheme with one qualification that covered the whole country ( like Scotland) it would be a start. National qualifications for MUR and NMS have proved the concept so why not other schemes?
I appreciate that this is against the current political dogma of localism, but that is just what it is, political dogma. we work in a NATIONAL health service, make it national and fair to all no matter where they live.
How fair was I to a patient yesterday when I had to signpost her to another pharmacy as I could not provide her with EHC under the PGD for the PCT where I was working but I could do so today when I am working less than 10 miles away but across the PCT boundary .

Hi David,

I agree. We are building an online EHC accreditation platform for our PCT that will supplement the CPPE packages to try and make it easier for pharmacists to engage with our EHC LES. Still work in progress but a national accreditation would be far better, however sexual health services will sit with Public Health teams in the new world so a national scheme might be harder to achieve.
