As a locum I can just see my employers paying me for this, or should I say not paying me.

Another piece of stupid research, we do CPD because we have to do it. Mine has been assessed and i did better than I thought I would. There is nothing like a letter calling for your CPD to make you record it all.

CPD is part and parcel of keeping up with the sharp and leading edge of the profession. If a pharmacist wishes to practice, he/she should keep up to date. I do not agree that employers should be giving protected time for this. For example, from October 2011 community pharmacists will be expected to know about NMS. All pharmacists wishing to practice in community pharmacy, should be up to date with the requirements for NMS. If not, they should very well give up practicing in this sector!! When one goes to University for the degree, who pays for that four years of "protected learning time"........ surely SELF PAID TIME!!! My congrats to Ian for passing the CPD call but as a locum, he should be keeping up with developments. The locum rates or indeed the salary is inclusive of up to date knowledge. I wonder if he pays a plumber/electrician etc time to study how to carry out any work that is given?

We record it because it is now a mandatory requirement! But I agree, my CPD time is now all about recording it and less emphasis on actually reading. Perhaps why so many older pharmacists came off the register over the last 3 yrs. I think bigger companies like lloyds give protected CPD time. You won't get it as a locum because you don't belong to anyone. You must do it yourself. Swings and roundabouts!
