"Pharmacists have reported being "reprimanded" by PCTs for dispensing specials and some have been advised to use generics as an alternative to brands for unlicensed indications, NPA head of information services Leyla Hannbeck told C+D."

Surely the PCTs should be telling the GP practices what to do and to reprimand them, not the pharmacies who are dispensing (and confirmed with the doctor that the item is a special).

What PCTs are reprimanding???

Yesterday received a private Rx for diltiazem rectal cream. Patient reports that his GP is now not allowed to prescribe the cream, and after having tried various other options he has finally decided to go private for the cream knowing that he was going to have to pay handsomely for the special.
To me this is in principal a breach of the mandate that the Secretary of State has to deliver free care at the point of use.
Also now have to sell consumables to my Type 2 Diabetics, as they are not provided on Rx anymore.
Disturbing developments I say.

"PCTs pile pressure on pharmacists to slash costs".. a bit laughable. It looks like the pricing bureau have taken on that task themselves with the ridiculous underpayments made to pharmacies.

Lost opportunity to save money was not forcing through generic substitution due to vested interests not wanting it to happen, including it seemed at the time the PSNC. Perhaps worth a revisit.
