Lloydspharmacy warns that clinical senates need bite
Clinical senates proposed in the government's revised NHS reforms must not be "toothless" and ignored by commissioning groups in the new-look NHS, Lloydspharmacy has warned.
The government hadto ensure that commissioners listened to senate views while curtailing additional bureaucracy, Lloydspharmacy said in a discussion paper on NHS plans revealed last week.
"One promising option would be to place a duty on local clinical commissioning groups to consult [senates] when patient pathways are redesigned," Lloydspharmacy proposed. A national clinical senate should also be established to advise the NHS commissioning board.
Only one senate should be tied to each commissioning group to ensure it becomes the "natural focus of advice for commissioners", the Lloydspharmacy paper added.
