the high street is dead and a nostalgic memory.
The public have voted with their wallets the only vote that matters. The grocery chains continue to offer and refine their offer to the public which they reap the rewards of profits.
For example health & beauty manufacturing has concentrated in to handful of multinational companies so choice is governed by the supermaket buyer.
Why would anybody now want to go the high street its abit like pharmacy negotiating with the government, no single authoritative voice.
The question that has to be answered is what do the public want and are prepared to PAY for?
The grocery chains will continue to dominate the retail market and no one has the power to stop them. If they want to sell products below trade or ask suppliers for more discount or impose extended payment terms as a supplier are you not going to supply them?
As a supplier why would you go the expense of promoting any products to high street stores when you can cover the big five where most of your products will be sold anyway. If they dont sell it then theres always poundland.
So I will get in to my car and go to the local superstore park for free and get 90% of my families needs for the month within 90 minutes, and watch how the new high stree retailers are doing when the local network covers a news worthy story after all I am no different to the vast majority of the public. Good Luck Mary
