As has been commented on in a similar article today the drive to upgrade EPSr2 is being driven entirely by the developers and their share holders who simply want money (from pharmacy contractors).

I have seen little evidence that EPSr2 will work reliably even close to100% of the time and to the average front line pharmacist will likely result in nothing more than more work and more problems.

Why rush to spend good money upgrading?

I understand that the whole of the Isle of Wight is covered both in surgeries and pharmacies by EPS R2. It would be interesting to get their feedback on whether or not the whole process was worth it so far. (I trust there will be no "interference" from their system suppliers if the contractors wish to respond)

Any IoW pharmacists out there today?

Smartcards - In our area the certificates for the premises cards are running out now that were issued 2 years ago. The NHS portal has been upgraded somehow to not let the pharmacy update their certificates. Ask the GP surgery as local agents to update the certificates and you get various responses from no chance to what...? Why has the GPhC not taken control of the issue of smartcards. We all have to do online registration each year and they could issue a card which activates by input of your password the 1st time used after the start of a new year. Any pharmacist / technician struck off the register's card would cancelled via N3. Simples! take the responsibility away from PCTs and Gp surgeries as local agents.

EPS Release 2 was deployed across the Isle of Wight 17 practices and 31 pharmacies, between September and November 2011 and is still bedding in. So far 1 in 7 residents have nominated a pharmacy and the number of prescriptions is steadily increasing . It is early days yet, but among the island’s pharmacists there are strong advocates for it. Take a look at what people who know - the users - are saying www.cfh.nhs.uk/eps/iow

I believe the GPs are all using the same system - and it is not EMIS or SystmOne. So not a true reflection of what would happen if suddenly rolled out UK-wide.
