With a resident population of 1,300 I'm not sure how opening a pharmacy with all the regs etc that go with that could possibly pay. Is there something about the financial arrangements for pharmacy contractors in Scotland that make it worthwhile to open for such a small population which does not happen in England?

Answers on a postcard from that lovely island please.

What of GPs opening pharmacies in their practice to the detriment of existing pharmacies

One obvious solution is to make all dispensing doctors employ a pharmacist thus doing away with an age old conflict of interests.

In normal circumstances I'd agree with A A, but 46% of the resident population of Cumbrae is over 60, compared to 25% in the rest of the Health Board area. Further, the non-resident population swells to approximately 3,000-4,500 from Spring until the end of Autumn. If one knows where to look, one can find out the turnover of the GP dispensary and realise that this is an unusual 'neighbourhood'.
