MP backs pharmacy services in NHS reforms

MP Yvonne Fovargue has stressed the importance of pharmacy services in NHS reforms during a visit to a Rowland pharmacy branch in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Ms Fovargue, MP for Wigan and a member of the Health Select Committee, said she wanted to see pharmacy-based services flourish in the new NHS structure. She also emphasised that the new commissioning system should be influenced by a wide range of healthcare professionals.

"Today I saw for myself the day-to-day work that takes place in the pharmacy and the facilities and services it provides for the public across Ashton," she explained. "I'm keen to see their role maintained and enhanced in the government's plans for NHS reform."

Her comments were echoed by councillor and chair of the Wigan health and wellbeing board Nigel Ash, who was also present at the visit. "Pharmacists don't just dispense prescriptions; they offer help and advice to people to use their medicines properly and how to lead healthier lives, so it really brought home to me the vital role they play in the health of the nation," he commented.

LPC secretary Bruce Prentice said the visit was a "real success" and a "big step in the right direction" towards building a strong relationship with the local health and wellbeing board.
