More pharmacies suffer damage as violence spreads across country

Pharmacists in Manchester and Wolverhampton have seen their businesses damaged as the violence in London spreads across the country.

Violence spread across the UK on Tuesday night, and pharmacists said they were closing early in some areas last night over fears of more unrest.

"We had to close early on Tuesday and we are having to close early today," a Superdrug employee at its store in the Mander Centre, Wolverhampton told C+D last night.

"I am making sure all customers are out as there are nothing but youths and police on the street," he said before leaving the store.

Pharmacists in Manchester also feared a repeat of Tuesday night's violence, which saw stores in the city centre set alight.

"We have heard from customers that it might go to the city centre tonight and other pharmacies have been targeted," a Boots employee said last night.

One Lloydspharmacy in Salford had its window smashed as a result of the violence.

"They didn't go through the windows but the glass will need to be replaced which we will have to wait about a week for. The windows are currently boarded up. It was absolutely horrible when we discovered them in the morning when we opened the branch," an employee told C+D.

C+D is continuing to speak to pharmacies affected by the riots across the UK and will be posting live updates throughout the day.
