Patient care and silicone implant scandal

As David Cameron sets out plans to tackle patient care in England and the breast implant scandal deepens, Isobel Smith brings you a round up of today’s health headlines

To improve patient care in England, Prime Minister David Cameron has today announced a package of measures aimed at tackling the problem, from hourly ward rounds by nurses to patient inspections, the BBC reports. The Guardian also covers this story.

Meanwhile detectives investigating the death of a fourth patient at the Stepping Hill hospital in Stockport have arrested a 46-year-old male nurse, the Telegraph reports.

A review into whether women with banned PIP breast implants need them removing is expected to release its findings imminently, writes the BBC. 

And men have now also been brought into the international scandal after it was revealed that the faulty silicone gel was also used in male buttock, chest and testicle implants, the Telegraph writes.

On the subject of plastic surgery, the Guardian reports that more men worry about their body image than woman, according to research.

And while you might associate going senile with old age, a study published in the BMJ has suggested that the brain's ability to function can start to deteriorate as early as 45, the BBC reports.

But London scientists have said that casual cannabis use can actually improve concentration levels and memory, the Daily Mail reports. However the group from Kings College stressed that long-term use of the drug could be harmful.

The Guardian reports that plans to raise the motorway speed limit to 80 mph will damage people's health by increasing pollution and lead to more obesity, according to an online report in the BMJ.
