The new gel – which contains sodium hyaluronate and trehalose – extends the "ocular surface residence time" of the Thealoz Duo eye drops, making it "ideal" for night-time use, the manufacturer said.

The gel has been shown to “significantly extend the increase in tear-film thickness" when compared to other gels, and requires fewer applications, according to Thea Pharmaceuticals.

Thealoz Duo drops "protect cell membranes from extreme dryness", it added.

Thirty unit doses of Thealoz Duo Gel retail for £10.99, while Thealoz Duo 10ml retails for £13.99. Both products are also available on prescription.
