Responsible Pharmacist SOPs  

To aid you in the implementation of the Responsible Pharmacist regulations, the the NPA has developed a complete series of SOPs that you can download for free.

 

The SOPs are outlined below and the text links will become live over the next couple of months when the documents are finalised so please keep checking back.

The safe and effective ordering of medicinal productsThis SOP deals with the processes involved in the ordering of medicinal products, from detailing the pharmacy staff who are authorised to order medicines, to whom the medicines should be ordered from and how they are ordered.
The safe and effective storage of medicinal productsThis SOP deals with the processes involved in the storage of medicines, detailing which pharmacy staff are authorised to receive and check an incoming order and the process for putting the stock away. It also deals with date checking.
The safe and effective preparation of medicinal productsThis SOP deals with the processes required for the preparation of medicinal products within the pharmacy including detailing the members of the pharmacy team who are authorised to prepare a medicinal product.
The safe and effective sale of medicinal productsThis SOP deals with the processes involved in the sale of a medicinal product. Who may sell medicinal products and the process which should be followed when a sale is undertaken.
The safe and effective supply of medicinal productsThis SOP deals predominantly with the processes involved in the supply of a medicinal product against a prescription - from when the prescription is taken into the pharmacy, to when the completed medicinal product is supplied to the patient.
The safe and effective delivery of medicinal productsThis SOP deals with the processes involved in the delivery of a medicinal product and details who can prepare medicinal products for delivery, what process should be followed during preparation and during the delivery process.
The safe and effective disposal of medicinal productsThis SOP deals with the processes which are involved in disposal of expired medicinal products and patient returned medicinal products.
Record KeepingThis procedure details the record keeping arrangements which apply to the safe and effective ordering, storage, preparation, sale, supply, delivery and disposal of medicinal products.
Dealing with an incident which indicates that the pharmacy business is not running in a safe and effective mannerThis procedure describes how an incidents which occur in a pharmacy should be handled including detailing which members of staff are authorised investigate and resolve incidents and the actions to be taken once an incident has been resolved.
Assuming the duties and change-over of the responsible pharmacistThis procedure helps guide the responsible pharmacist and details what they need to do to assume the role of the responsible pharmacist and how the role is subsequently relinquished.
Operating in the absence of the responsible pharmacistThis procedure details what the responsible pharmacist needs to do if they are intending on being absent from the pharmacy premises, what the remaining pharmacy staff can and can’t do and what the responsible pharmacist needs to do upon their return to the pharmacy.
Review and notification of standard operating proceduresThis procedure details how the standard operating procedures should be reviewed or amended, how often they should be reviewed and also the procedure for notifying any changes made to the pharmacy team.
The roles and responsibilities of pharmacy staffThis procedure should be used by the responsible pharmacist to determine what roles within the pharmacy business each member of the pharmacy team can perform.
Provision of advice by pharmacy staff who are not pharmacistsThis procedure details the advice which members of the pharmacy team are authorised to give and the process for giving this advice.
Dealing with complaintsThis SOP details a compliant complaints procedure which satisfies both the requirements of the responsible pharmacist regulations but also the applicable NHS legislation in the individual home countries.
