A training programme for pre-registration students offered in partnership by C+D and Medway School of Pharmacy

Springboard will equip students with the necessary skills to ensure a smooth transition from student to professional, and will enable students to meet the appropriate competencies in the RPSGB student handbook. The course will be practice based and will include eight study days concentrating on the practical day-to-day activities of a pharmacist.

Course outline

This course is unique in that by the end of it the students will have completed accredited medicines use review (MUR) and medicines counter assistant training programmes, and be enrolled on a Practice Certificate in Pharmacy Management (PCiPM) course.

The credits acquired by completing these courses can be accumulated towards further post-graduate courses at Medway School of Pharmacy. The programme will consist of eight in-house study days covering:

  • Responding to symptoms
  • Law and ethics
  • Controlled Drugs regulations
  • Medicines use reviews
  • Drug Tariff
  • Pharmaceutical calculations
  • Dressings and wound management
  • Monitored dose units
  • Smoking cessation
  • Drug misuse
  • Management
  • Communication skills
  • First aid
  • The NHS and how it works
  • Influencing your PCT
  • Auditing your services
  • Clinical cases using the BNF
  • Practice exam questions

Day Courses

All the study days are available individually, subject to availability, to contractors who only require assistance in particular subject areas. These study days are charged at £150 per day.

Assessment

RPSGB examinations will take place in June.

Assessment will form part of the individual courses offered within the programme (MCA training, MUR training, Practice Certificate in Pharmacy Management). The course will support the attainment of performance standards as set by the RPSGB.

Student support

Each student will have a nominated personal tutor in addition to their pre-reg tutor in the workplace. Students will be issued with a student handbook that will contain information about the course, points of contact and the study days.

Course delivery

The eight study days will be facilitated and delivered by staff from Medway School of Pharmacy and C+D, and will be held at Medway School of Pharmacy. The first aid training day will be covered by a professional first aid training company. Expert speakers will be employed to talk about relevant subjects, for example the Drug Tariff.

Tutor day

A training day will be offered for pre-reg tutors. This day is designed to offer support to tutors and will cover subjects such as completing the RPSGB paperwork, dealing with management issues, trouble shooting and any areas of concern raised by tutors.

Cost

The cost of the full course is £1,500 + VAT per student.

This includes a tutor training day, a tutor support handbook, student handbook, eight student study days, a personal tutor, all course materials, three distance learning courses with certificates, Drug Tariff training, a C+D Guide to OTC Medicines and access to online practice exam questions.
