Sleep is a process that takes up a third of our lives. During sleep, the body is not simply ‘switched off’ – rather, it is an active process that has both cognitive and restorative functions.

By getting adequate sleep, we are able to maintain normal cognitive behaviour, such as memory, thought and speech. It is necessary we get good sleep – poor sleep may lead to complications and can contribute to chronic ill health.
