Mrs Friar, a diabetic woman in her 60s, comes to the pharmacy for advice. She is on a number of medications for blood pressure. A lifetime smoker, she suffers from COPD, for which she is currently receiving a course of amoxicillin and oral prednisolone.

While walking around the supermarket five days ago, her husband banged the trolley into the back of her right leg. Although Mrs Friar didn't think anything of it at the time, it caused a large cut, which bled a great deal.

Since then, the inch-sized gash has failed to heal and Mrs Friar says it is now sore. On examination, the pharmacist is able to see a ragged-edged cut surrounded by a defined area of redness. There is little serious fluid leaking from the
