From the “flurry” of merger and acquisitions, to the increasing emergence of the “bricks-and-clicks” pharmacy – this C+D podcast considers how the sector performed during COVID-19

Property brokers Christie & Co published its latest annual pharmacy market review on June 24, 2021.

The review considers – among other things – the impact the pandemic has had on pharmacy business activity and analyses key trading data to understand pharmacy performance throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

C+D deputy and news editor Grace Lewis spoke to Christie & Co’s Tony Evans, director and head of pharmacy and Karl Clezy, director with responsibility for pharmacy agency services in the north of England and Scotland, to delve deeper into the report and answer the question: ‘How have community pharmacies across the UK fared during the COVID-19 pandemic?’

Listen to the podcast to find out about:

  • The notable sales and acquisitions during the COVID-19 pandemic and their impact on the pharmacy market
  • Whether there were any notable differences in pharmacies’ performance in each of the UK countries
  • Independents’ and multiples’ differing approaches to the pandemic and why supermarket and health centre pharmacies may have struggled
  • Why a “bricks-and-clicks” business model could be one of pharmacy's lasting legacies from COVID-19
  • And how the sector’s “fantastic” response to the pandemic has cemented its position as a key part of primary care and the NHS as a whole.

This podcast has been developed in partnership with Christie & Co and was recorded in June 2021, before the rebranding of Lloydspharmacy's Echo to Lloydsdirect and before pharmacy's COVID-19 costs settlement was announced.
