47 pharmacists could be struck off for CPD failure

A pharmacist has been struck off the register and nearly 50 face the same fate so far this year for failing to submit their CPD records, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has revealed.
The regulator issued one removal, six notices of removal and 40 notices of intention to remove between January and February, it revealed at its council meeting this month (April 10). Within those two months, it requested more than 9,000 CPD records.
A total of 235 pharmacists requested extensions to the deadline for CPD submissions during this period. The GPhC refused 12 per cent of these requests, although it did not specify why.
Last year, 52 pharmacists were struck off the register for failing to submit their CPD, one of whom is appealing the decision.

The removals came as a result of the GPhC gaining new powers to remove pharmacy professionals who did not meet CPD requirements in 2011, which did not fully come into force until 2012. |
GPhC pledges to minimise time and costs of revalidation|
The powers enable the GPhC to send registrants a notice of intention to remove if they do not produce adequate CPD, which can include failing to submit records altogether, producing entries that are irrelevant or making false declarations. If the GPhC does not hear back within 28 days of sending the notice, it sends a supplementary notice. If the registrant fails to reply to this within a month, the GPhC can issue a notice of removal, giving the reasons behind the decision and informing them of their right to appeal. |
