Lloydspharmacy’s parent company Celesio UK announced in October 2017 it would cease trading in “around 190” pharmacies in England “through a combination of store closures and divestments”.

Cormac Tobin – Celesio UK managing director at the time – said the organisation made the decision due to “changes to government policy on reimbursement and retrospective clawbacks over the past two years”.

The multiple has never published a list of these branches, but C+D can now reveal 182 locations where Lloydspharmacy has closed or sold its store, one year after the announcement.

Of these 182 branches, 78 have been closed permanently, while 104 have found new owners.

Celesio UK declined to comment to C+D on whether it feels the move has paid off, and what is next for the multiple now that is has closed or sold 182 branches.

The multiple also declined to confirm whether 44 of the 182 sites identified by C+D were part of the original list of “around 190” branches it had referred to in October 2017. However, it told C+D that “if they are in England and took place after our announcement then generally they will be included in the 190”.

Most recently, the multiple has closed pharmacies in Low Grange Health Village in Southbank, Cleveland – which closed on August 22 – and in a Sainsbury’s branch in Pinner, Middlesex – which closed on August 31.
