People with phenylketonuria cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine, which therefore “builds up in their blood and brain [and] can lead to brain damage”, according to NHS England.

The PKU Easy Microtabs release amino acids other than phenylalanine slowly into the body.

The “unpleasantness” of consuming other protein substitutes could affect patient’s ability to follow their prescribed diet, the manufacturer said. The PKU Easy Microtabs have a coating to “provide a palatable alternative” to these products.

The coating prevents them from dissolving before reaching the stomach, “minimising acid reflux and bad breath”, Galen said.

The tablets can be swallowed with liquid or eaten with cold foods like jam or fruit puree.
