Allergan recalls eye ointment over particle fears
The manufacturer of Lacri-Lube is concerned particles around the nozzle of the tube could get into patients' eyes, says the MHRA
Allergan Limited has recalled two batches of its Lacri-Lube eye ointment after receiving a "small number of complaints" about patients finding black particles around the nozzle of the tube, the UK medicines watchdog has announced.
The particles, which are produced when the caps of the 3.5g and 5g tubes are “overtightened” during the manufacturing process, could get into patients' eyes when the product is administered, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) warned yesterday (September 21).
Remaining stock of the two affected batches should be quarantined and returned to their original supplier, the watchdog said. It said unaffected stock should become available to pharmacists by "late November".
This is “likely to result in a shortage of the product” and a normal supply is unlikely to resume until early next year, the MHRA stressed.
Pharmacists with stock enquiries should contact Allergan Customer Services on 0800 3767975 and choose option 2, or email [email protected]. Those with medical enquiries should contact 01628 494026 or email [email protected], the MHRA added.
