Autumn pre-reg pass rate falls

Only students who were deemed able to practise safely passed the registration exam, says GPhC chief Duncan Rudkin

The proportion of pharmacy students passing the September pre-registration exam has fallen by 8 percentage points in the past year.

Of the 701 candidates who sat the exam last month, 427 students had passed while 274 had failed, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) announced on Friday (October 24).

The 61 per cent pass rate is lower than 2013's 69 per cent, but higher than September 2012's 58 per cent.

In this year's September assessment, 338 students sat the exam for the first time, 311 for the second time and 52 for the third. Pharmacy students are only permitted to take the exam three times.

GPhC chief executive Duncan Rudkin congratulated the students who had passed the assessment. "The registration assessment plays an important role in making sure that only those candidates who are able to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding to practise safely can join the register," he said.

Eighty-five per cent of students passed this June's registration exam, an improvement on the 78 per cent of students who passed in June 2013.
