Well owner Zameer Choudrey has been appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours list.

The chief executive of Bestway, which completed its rebrand of the Co-operative Pharmacy under the Well name last year, said he "cannot begin to express how honoured I am".

The government said Mr Choudrey had received the CBE in recognition of his "services to the UK wholesale industry and charity in the UK and abroad".

Mr Choudrey is a founding trustee of Bestway Foundation UK and the chairman of Bestway Foundation Pakistan. These organisations receive 2.5% of Bestway Group's profits to spend on worthy causes in health and education, including a UK scholarship programme for underprivileged students, the business said.

Mr Choudrey had "transformed" the company from a UK wholesale business with a turnover of £1.1 billion into a global operation of £3.4bn, it added.

Mr Choudrey said the CBE shows that “it doesn’t matter where you come from, [it's] your work ethic and the impact you make”.

“What matters is that you contribute and help make Britain even better, something many immigrants do on a daily basis,” he added.
