Boots to change 'sexist' product prices
An online petition claims that women are paying more than men for equivalent products at Boots stores
Boots will adjust the cost of its own-brand razors and eye cream following criticism over its “sexist” prices.
The multiple's promise came after an online petition signed by more than 40,000 people called on the company to revise the "unfair" prices.
Boots charges £2.29 for a pack of eight women’s disposable razors, compared with £1.49 for a pack of 10 for men, according to the petition. It also charges £9.99 for an eye cream targeted at women compared to £7.29 for one aimed at men, the petition claimed.
Boots told C+D today (February 4) it is “taking action to correct these prices”. The two products are "exceptional cases [that] do not completely meet our principles”, and the multiple is “surprised and disappointed” at their pricing, it said.
The cream and razors cited in the petition differ for each gender, but Boots will level out their prices to ensure customers are "confident they are getting the same value", it said.
The health and beauty giant will contact its suppliers to encourage them to review the pricing of their products, it added.
Parliament welcomes price changes
All-party pharmacy group (APPG) treasurer Paula Sherriff, along with other MPs, welcomed the price changes during a debate in parliament on gender and product pricing.
"The onus is now on other retailers to do the same," she said on Tuesday (February 2).
Do any of your products vary in price depending on the gender they are aimed at?
