Malcolm Harrison, who is also a fellow of the NHS Innovation Accelerator Programme, will replace Nanette Kerr at the CCA – which represents Boots, Lloydspharmacy, Well, Rowlands and Superdrug, as well as the pharmacy arms of Morrisons, Tesco and Asda.

Mr Harrison – who will take up the post on March 5 – has been senior manager of Boots’ project and contract development team for almost four years, before which he was an area manager at the multiple.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Harrison said he believes the sector can “do more to relieve some of the pressures being felt by the NHS, and ensure healthcare remains accessible and sustainable over the long term”.

“On behalf of the member companies, I look forward to working with all stakeholders in the community pharmacy sector to listen to, understand and respond to the needs of the NHS and patients.”

CCA chair Margaret MacRury – who is also superintendent director of Rowlands Pharmacy – said she is “delighted to welcome Malcolm on board”.

“He brings over 20 years of experience as a pharmacist and regional manager, and most recently led the Community Pharmacy Future programme, road-testing new and innovative pharmacy services.”

“This leadership, intimate knowledge of our profession and industry, and forward-thinking attitude, will be essential as we mould a new relationship with the NHS and local healthcare providers,” she added.

Ms Kerr, who is leaving the CCA after two-and-a-half years in the chief executive role – said she had “thoroughly enjoyed” her time at the trade body.

“Now is the right time to step aside and pass the baton to someone else,” she added. “I believe Malcolm is the right person to lead the CCA and the sector at this critical time.”

The CCA was represented by Pharmacy Voice, until the body dissolved in 2017 following the National Pharmacy Association’s decision to pull out.
