Carbocisteine now in sachets
Manufacturer Intrapharm has made mucolytic carbocisteine available in sachets for the first time.
The 10ml sachets, which launched last week, are a “user-friendly” alternative to the existing capsules and bottled liquid, Intrapharm said. A “main benefit” of taking the drug in its new form is that patients only need three large sachets a day, rather than six capsules or nine teaspoons, it said.
The sachets – which contain 750mg of the drugs –are also 10% less expensive than the capsules and 27% less expensive than the bottled liquid, making them the most cost-effective option for the NHS, the manufacturer claimed.
The drug is indicated for patients over 15 years with recent respiratory disorders, and is usually prescribed to those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Intrapharm added. A box of 15 sachets has an NHS list price of £3.85.
