C+D's pharmacy closures investigation up for health journalism award

C+D’s analysis of the locations of 140 pharmacies that have closed since the pharmacy funding cuts in England has been shortlisted for the leading health journalism award.

In July 2018, C+D's deputy editor at the time Lilian Anekwe exclusively revealed the locations of 140 community pharmacies that closed across England between November 2016 – the month before the 12% funding cut came into force – and May 2018, and found that one in four served patients in deprived areas.

The Medical Journalists’ Association announced last week (May 22) that Ms Anekwe's coverage has been shortlisted in the ‘Feature of the Year (specialist audience)' category at the organisation’s awards.

For the analysis, Ms Anekwe used the government’s definition of deprivation and found that 39 of the 140 pharmacies – or 28% – were located in the most deprived neighbourhoods in England.

Further award nominations

Last month, the British Society of Magazine Editors revealed that C+D is up for two awards: 'Best Content Idea – Digital' for its pharmacist equal pay interactive; and 'Best Scoop' for exclusively revealing that health secretary Matt Hancock wants the UK to follow a “French model” of pharmacy.

C+D is also nominated for four Association of Online Publishing Awards, with the ceremony due to take place in London on June 27. C+D has been nominated in the following categories:

  • Digital Editorial Team of the Year: B2B
  • Audience Development Team of the Year
  • Digital Editor of the Year – James Waldron
  • Digital Sales Person of the Year – Dan Linton.

What else do you think C+D should investigate?
