People who suffer from multiple sclerosis may be wasting their time taking omega-3 fish oil supplements after research has suggested that it provides no additional benefits. The Daily Mail reports that patients take the supplement in the belief that it helps prevents the disease causing further damage.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that people underestimate the amount of sugar in drinks which are thought to be healthy. Research from Glasgow University found that soft drinks could be accounting for a large portion of their recommended calorie intake. 

And the Daily Mail reports that the curry spice tumeric may help ward off heart attacks in people who have had recent bypass surgery. The yellow pigment found in tumeric is known for having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

A new service will allow women to order emergency contraception via the internet and have it delivered to their door within two hours, all for the price of £20. Doctors will assess orders before they are dispatched, but critics have argued that it could encourage more under age sex, the Telegraph reports.

The BBC reports that targeted ultrasound treatment for prostate cancer could reduce the risk side effects such as impotence and incontinence.The Guardian also covers this story.

In other news, the NHS continues to come under scrutiny following reports of patients being discharged from hospital overnight. But NHS chief Sir Bruce Keogh has ordered an urgent review of how the health service discharges hundreds of thousands of patients, the Guardian reports. The Telegraph and The Independent also cover this story.

But criticism of the government doesn't end there as the Guardian also reports that the government's failure to launch a flu campaign may have contributed to a rise in deaths in the year after the flu pandemic.

Prime Minister David Cameron is to announce a £1 million nursing overhaul this summer in an attempt to identify best nursing practise and introduce new standards, the Telegraph reports.

Finally from the nationals, a five-year-old girl in the US has died of a drug overdose after being given twice the recommended amount of cough medicine, the Telegraph reports.

In pharmacy news, a man from Horley has been charged in connection with an armed robbery at a pharmacy in the town. Alex Highfield, 22, appeared at South East Surry Magistrates Court last Thursday charged with attempted theft from a store, robbery, possession of an imitation firearm with intent cause fear and possession of a class B drug.

Independent pharmacy chain MedicX has helped fund a new water pump for school children and teachers in Zimbabwe. The donation, organised by the company's water cooler supplier AquAid, will give children at Pafikio Mutasa High Schoool access to uncontaminated drinking water. "For every four mains-fed water coolers we install at our pharmacies, we fund a new ‘elephant pump' to supply clean water to communities in Africa," said Gavin Birchall, operations director at MedicX.   Actavis had appointed Jon Holt to work in the company's marketing team. Mr Holt formerly worked in the Actavis sales team and started his new position as product manager for the Actavis generics scheme on April 1. His new role will see him develop the company's Accumulator scheme and give national support to the sales team.
