Efficiency drive leaves future of RPS headquarters in doubt

Business The future of the RPS's headquarters in Lambeth is in the balance as the society decides whether to redevelop the premises as a home to share with Pharmaceutical Press, or to relocate to "more suitable accomodation".

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has announced it is still unsure whether it will remain in its Lambeth headquarters after 2014.

The RPS was considering whether to relocate "into more suitable accommodation" or to work in partnership with a developer "to redevelop 1 Lambeth High Street as a long- term, fit-for-purpose home for the society and Pharmaceutical Press," it said in a statement yesterday (July 31).

The RPS is considering the sales of its Lambeth adress as part of its effort to "improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness"

The comments follow the news in May that the RPS was considering the sale of its Lambeth address as part of its effort "to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness".

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which rents part of the building and has previously paid the RPS almost £2.5 million annually for rent and resources, has already announced that it intends to move to new premises in late 2014.

The RPS was "not willing to carry the risk of occurring costs which could be incurred due to difficulty in letting out part of the building," it said.

RPS president Martin Astbury said the assembly had "scrutinised all the options and used the best advice available" when considering the future premises of the society. He also announced that the RPS would be holding a webinar on August 7 to discuss its decision-making process. Members can submit questions in advance to [email protected]
