The pair sold clomiphene citrate and numerous anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders illegally online from September 2008 to July 2010, Chelmsford Crown Court heard on February 8, following an investigation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The MHRA investigated after being alerted about a website believed to be selling illegal medicines.

The court heard that sales through Mr Corbersmith's website between September 2008 and July 2010 were in the region of £500,000 and sales through Mr Hazell's website totalled £11,000.

Acting MHRA head of enforcement Nimo Ahmed said: "Cases like this show the lengths criminals will go to for financial gain."

Mr Ahmed warned that the organisation would "not hesitate to take action against those who undermine public health". "The danger of purchasing medicines online is that you just don't know what you are taking," he said.
