Inhaler add-on device aims to improve patient technique
Manufacturer Clement Clarke International has launched an inhaler add-on device that aims to coach patients on correct inhaler technique.
The Flo-Tone Trainer can be attached to the mouthpiece of an inhaler, and will give an audible signal to indicate when the patient is using the inhaler at the correct inspiratory flow rate.
The product is intended to help reduce the problem of patients using the device improperly – decreasing the need for reliever medications, hospitalisations and asthma-related deaths. "Many patients inhale too quickly, with the result that much of the medication impacts in the throat, instead of reaching the lungs," the company said.
Clement Clarke managing director Mark Sanders reported that the company had received "outstanding" feedback on the Flo-Tone device.
"We anticipate this simple, low-cost solution can bring substantial health gain and reduced healthcare costs," he said.
