Counterfeit alert

The MHRA investigation began in January 2011 after medicines were seized in Coventry by the UK Border Agency.

Mr Bacai had used false documentation and fake names to hire mailboxes that were used to receive packages sent from suppliers in India and China before they were sold on to customers abroad, the MHRA said.

Mr Bacai, a Portuguese national, pleaded guilty to five offences including conspiracy to supply class C drugs, POMs and medicines not on the General Sales List, forgery, as well as possession of false identity documents. He was jailed at Guildford Crown Court on Friday (February 22) for 44 months, the MHRA said this week.

"We are committed to pursuing those involved in the illicit supply of medicines and taking action to ensure that public health is protected," said MHRA acting head of enforcement Nimo Ahmed.
