Lloydspharmacy to tackle adherence with smart pill launch
Clinical Helius smart pills, which will go on sale through Lloydspharmacy in September, will be offered to patients taking medication for heart conditions and diabetes.
Lloydspharmacy is to launch a smart pill system with edible microchips that tells patients when their next medicine dose is due.
Helius smart pills, which will go on sale through Lloydspharmacy in September, will be offered to patients such as those taking medication for heart conditions and diabetes. Each pill has a digestible sensor that sends a signal to a patch on the patient's arm when swallowed. Data is then relayed to a smart phone. Patients take this smart pill together with their drugs, enabling the patient and their doctor to track when the drugs were taken, the dose and information such as the patient's heart rate and body temperature. |
Lloydspharmacy: an exciting development for medicine adherence |
The patient will also receive a reminder if the drugs are not taken.
Lloydspharmacy healthcare services director Steve Gray called the Helius system "an exciting development that takes our current medication adherence offering to a whole new level.
"There is a huge problem with medicines not being taken correctly," Mr Gray said.
"Anyone taking several medications knows how easy it can be to lose track of whether or not you've taken the correct tablets that day."
The Helius smart pill, designed by US company Proteus Biomedical, will be available privately through Lloydspharmacy for about £50 a month.
