A former director of retail at holiday company TUI has been appointed Rowlands Pharmacy’s new managing director, following Kenny Black’s “amicable departure”.

Mark Bather joined the multiple at the start of the year as retail operations director, following just under three years at TUI, two years as head of stores at mobile company Telefónica and more than 25 years as store director at Tesco, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Mr Bather has replaced former managing director Kenny Black, who C+D exclusively revealed yesterday had left the organisation to pursue new career opportunities.

Steve Anderson, managing director of the Phoenix UK group, which owns Rowlands, said Mr Bather had already “made a considerable impact” in his role as retail operations director. “He brings a wealth of retail experience…which will help us grow our business profitably in the years ahead,” Mr Anderson added.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Bather said: “We all know that community pharmacy faces extremely tough trading conditions, but I believe we are building a great team and developing a strategy to deliver the healthcare services which our patients and the NHS want and need.

“I’m looking forward to working with the team and the broader Phoenix board and I am excited to begin shaping the Rowlands estate,” he added.

What do you make of Mr Bather's appointment?

Arvind Sami, Locum pharmacist

I've met the guy when he was retail director. On the face he seems to have a genuine interest in the pharmacy. He did however express he has little knowledge about the pharmacy side of a business. From the questions and feedback we provided as managers of branches, he demonstrated a want to improve. I really hope he delivers

Paul Dishman, Pharmaceutical Adviser

What a joke appointment.

pharmacies should be run by pharmacists who really care about their colleagues and the profession. What a disaster .

Obviously NOT someone like Kenny Black  He almost destroyed Rowlands.  You’ll need all the luck, Rowlands . Unbelievable

Ana Pedro, Locum pharmacist

Yes I agree. The heart of any Pharmacy IS and should be the pharmacist. Pharmacists should not give up of their role for absolutely any reasons. A Pharmacy is a primary care centre a place where pharmacists help patients towards prevention of disease and other Services. Pharmacists should provide these services without worrying with achieving specific commercial targets but instead looking after profit by providing a service with the most quality and honesty possible. Again in the current times, the community pharmacist is becoming again that important link between a first attendance and referral in cases strictly necessary. Yes, let's moving forward towards clinical community service and get rid of these awful unbelievable targets.

Waqas Ali, Community pharmacist

I disagree I think pharmacy as a model is failing and I think we do need people with a fresh outlook to pharmacy which is also a business and start making the necessary tweaks and changes to ensure we are still able to provide patient services and not just complain about NHS cuts but do something about it.

Ana Pedro, Locum pharmacist

Absolute madness. It’s like expecting a sailor to fly a plane. Retail and pharmacy are two different areas altogether! Would of made more sense to appoint someone with a clinical background....

S J- Locum, Locum pharmacist

Utterly ridiculous. Rowlands will not survive for long.  He should FLY far away

Ana Pedro, Locum pharmacist

I agree. This shows how chaotic is the situation at Rowlands. Definitely the way to go is to invest in clinical community Pharmacy and service development in collaboration with other health professionals.
