“We are deeply saddened to report the death from COVID-19 of our founder, Joy Wingfield,” PLEA wrote in a post on its website yesterday (February 17).

This was followed by messages of tribute and condolences on social media by pharmacists and former colleagues.

“A titan in the field of pharmacy law and ethics”

Professor Wingfield was elected founding chairman of PLEA in 1997, a position she held until 2015. 

Early in her career, she worked as an inspector for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain – which was the pharmacy regulator before the General Pharmaceutical Council. In 2000, she was appointed honorary professor of pharmacy law and ethics at the University of Nottingham.

Remembered as “a titan in the field of pharmacy law and ethics”, Professor Wingfield edited Dale & Appelbe’s Pharmacy and Medicines Law – the original title of Pharmacy Law & Ethics – from the fifth edition in 1993 until the eleventh edition in 2017.

She co-authored Pharmacy Ethics and Decision Making (2007) and was the author of Practical Exercises in Pharmacy Law and Ethics (1997, 2002), PLEA wrote.

“In Joy’s long career, she made a major contribution to the subject of pharmacy law and ethics, breaking new ground in the way she brought to the fore the subject of ethics in pharmacy teaching and practice,” PLEA added.
