Pub-goers in Wales offered free blood pressure checks

Practice Mayberry Pharmacy has teamed up with Wetherspoon to give pub-goers in Wales the opportunity to get their blood pressure checked, in a campaign running from October to December

Pub-goers can get their blood pressure checked by pharmacists in a campaign being run across south Wales.

Mayberry Pharmacy has teamed up with the pub chain Wetherspoon to offer hundreds of free health checks in pubs on selected dates from October to December, the Welsh pharmacy chain announced on Friday (September 27).

The checks will include blood pressure tests and advice on weight loss and healthy living, it said.  Mayberry Pharmacy has created a series of beer mats  featuring "quirky" facts about organs affected by high blood pressure.

It was the first time that pharmacy had offered health checks in UK pubs and was a convenient place for customers to learn about their health, Mayberry Pharmacy said.

"By providing free health checks and blood pressure tests at these venues we are making it easier and more convenient for people to check and improve their health," said the company's director Paul Mayberry.

Assembly member Andrew Davies, who had his blood pressure checked by the team, said the scheme was "hugely innovative and groundbreaking" and held the potential to save many lives across south Wales.

"This campaign provides people with the means of finding out more about their health in a way that fits around their lives.  It is setting a precedent that can shape many other health campaigns," he added.

Pharmacists will be providing the tests at Wetherspoon pubs in Blackwood, Caerphilly, Newport, Penarth and Pontypool.
