Lloydspharmacy is “in the process of closing” one branch each in Grimsby, Manchester and Sandhurst, it confirmed to C+D last Friday (November 10).

It is still looking “to find an alternative option…which includes divestment” for branches in Hull and Bradford (see map below).

The news comes a week after Lloydspharmacy confirmed the locations of eight branches in Leicester and London where it will cease trading – including three whose closure has been decided.

The managers of three of the pharmacies in the latest confirmed batch were unable to comment, while two were not available when C+D tried to contact them.

Lloydspharmacy said all affected staff have been informed.

The total of 13 pharmacies are all part of the 190 “commercially unviable” branches in England that Lloydspharmacy's parent company Celesio UK has earmarked for closure or sale. The multiple would not confirm the location of the other 177 branches where it will cease trading.

MP: “I’ll campaign for a fair deal”

The Labour MP for Stretford and Urmston, Kate Green, told C+D today she is “angry, but not surprised” that a Manchester pharmacy in her constituency is among those closing.

“I have been campaigning hard against changes to charging arrangements introduced by the Tory government that have placed huge pressure on community pharmacies,” she said.

“Local pharmacies help take pressure off busy GP practices by offering simple procedures like blood pressure checks and flu jabs,” she continued. “They get to know their customers and can provide information and reassurance.”

“I’ll continue to campaign for a fair deal for our community pharmacies.”
