Scotland's outgoing chief pharmaceutical officer joins GPhC council

Scotland’s chief pharmaceutical officer (CPhO) will join the GPhC’s governing body next month, the regulator has announced.

Rose Marie Parr was appointed as a General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) council member along with Selina Ullah and Yousaf Ahmad to replace three departing members who served “two terms on the council”, the regulator announced earlier this week (March 9).

GPhC chair Nigel Clarke said the new members will “bring a wealth of high-level experience and expertise [and] will be valuable assets to the council”.

Ms Parr’s appointment as a GPhC council member follows last week’s (March 6) announcement that she will be retiring as Scotland’s CPhO at the end of July.

Announcing her departure, Scotland’s health secretary Jeane Freeman said in a statement on Twitter that Ms Parr “made a significant and valuable contribution as chief pharmaceutical officer over the past five years”.

“In her time, she has provided consistent leadership and has been an exemplary CPhO. I wish her the very best for her retirement when it comes at the end of July.”

Ms Parr has been Scotland’s CPhO since April 2015. During her time in the role, she launched 'Achieving Excellence in Pharmaceutical Care' in 2017, a strategy document as part of which she hoped to encourage people to use pharmacy as a “first port of call”.

She was previously chair of the Scottish Pharmacy Board of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain – the organisation that was in charge of regulating pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy premises in England, Scotland and Wales before these powers were transferred to the GPhC in September 2010.

What do you make of Ms Parr's decision to join the GPhC governing body?
