Whitworth Chemists managing director Jay Badenhorst was crowned Community Pharmacist of the Year at the eighth annual C+D Awards last night (June 11).

More than 600 guests, including 71 finalists, joined the C+D team on the night, held in association with Actavis, and watched as the 12 winners were announced at central London venue The Brewery.

The judges praised Mr Badenhorst for going the “extra mile” with a £250,000 investment in premises and introducing a variety of clinical services across the chain’s 35 branches in the north of England. “He has identified a niche and engaged with his team to deliver results,” the judges said.

Wicker Pharmacy in Sheffield - the first to receive an ‘excellent' rating from the General Pharmaceutical Council last year - took home the trophy for Pharmacy Team of the Year, while Lewis Pharmacy in Exmouth was awarded Independent Pharmacy of the Year for its service to cancer patients. 

Other winners on the night included Bannside Pharmacy in Portglenone in Northern Ireland, which won Public Health Initiative of the Year for its ‘Portglenone Gets Healthy!’ wellness and weight loss programme.

Pamela MacPherson from Rowlands Pharmacy in Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth was named Manager of the Year, while the award for Pharmacy Assistant of the Year went to Katherine Hood from Well pharmacy in Gorseinon, Swansea.
 

"Huge range of roles"

C+D editor Jennifer Richardson told the audience that this year’s finalists showcased the “huge range of roles” that pharmacists and their teams were carrying out.

Entrants had provided “metrics of their success” to back up their achievements, said Ms Richardson. But the finalists’ stories also showed that “there is value in the community pharmacy service that it is very difficult to measure in percentages or pounds”.
