September pre-reg exam pass rate jumps to 58%
The pass rate for September’s registration exam rose by 17 percentage points this year, the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has revealed.
Almost six in 10 (58%) students who sat the assessment passed, compared with four in 10 (41%) students who passed in the September 2016 exam.
A total of 825 candidates sat the exam on September 28, 2017, with 481 passing, the GPhC said.
GPhC chief executive Duncan Rudkin congratulated those who passed, acknowledging the roles of those who helped educate the trainees.
This exam marks the fourth sitting since the GPhC’s revamped registration assessment. The 41% pass rate last September – the lowest since 2011 – resulted in some students threatening to protest over its perceived difficulty.
The June exam this year saw candidates complaining about a lack of adequate preparation, with some feeling they had been used as “cheap labour”. The GPhC's board of assessors responded to the feedback in August.
