Manufacturer Valneva has launched a DEET-free insect repellent in time for summer.

Moskito Guard, which hit the market this month, is proven to work as effectively as the recommended concentration of DEET and provides up to eight hours protection in one application, Valneva claimed.

It is water-resistant, has a pleasant smell and can also be used by pregnant women and children over 24 months, the manufacturer said.

Moskito Guard is designed to provide protection against biting insects around the world, such as mosquitoes, fleas and ticks.

It contains 20% picaridin, a common alternative insect repellent, which is recommended by the World Health Organisation and Public Health England for demonstrating comparable repellent properties to DEET.

Moskito Guard is currently available as a 75ml spray, which retails at £7.99 and, from July, as a pack of 15 wipes at £6.59.
