June's registration exam pass mark was lowest for six years

The pass mark for the General Pharmaceutical Council’s (GPhC) June registration exam dropped by five percentage points compared to last year, C+D has learned.

The average pass mark for the two papers that pre-registration students sat in June was 63%, the lowest since the regulator took over responsbility for the assessment in 2011.

In comparison, the pass mark in June 2015 was 68%.

Some 95% of students passed this June's exam – the highest pass rate in four years, the regulator announced last week.

Pass mark now set before exam

The GPhC told C+D that under a new process, the difficulty of each question and the pass rate of an exam is now determined before a paper is sat, rather than afterwards. This means the regulator now has a better understanding of the exam in advance, it added.
