Zovirax recalled over ingredient fears
Manufacturer GSK is recalling batches of Zovirax eye ointment over concerns about its ingredients.
Two batches of the ointment, which contains the antiviral aciclovir, were recalled because active agents contained metal particles whose size was "outside the upper specification limit", the MHRA said yesterday (November 4).
No complaints or adverse effects have been reported and the recall was a precautionary measure, the medicines watchdog stressed. It advised health professionals to quarantine all remaining stock and return it to the original supplier.
There are no alternative batches of Zovirax eye ointment available and the MHRA said it had already received reports of shortages. It referred pharmacists to an NHS information document on alternative treatments for herpes simplex keratitis, such as Virgan eye gel.
