GPs unaware of NMS, says study's author

There is "limited knowledge" of pharmacy services, says Nottingham University's Matthew Boyd

University of Nottingham pharmacy practice lecturer Matthew Boyd told C+D that his evaluation of the new medicine service (NMS) revealed that GPs and pharmacists were under so much pressure that providing joined-up care for patients is "really difficult".

NMS is a good service and having switched inhalers in a GP practice I contacted the neighbouring pharmacies to inform them that a letter had been sent out that advised them that their chemist would do an NMS if they wished and show them how to use the inhaler. So, it was appreciated by one pharmacy that had their area manager around and said they needed to do more, so GP practices can work with community pharmacy in medicines optimisations locally.
