Pharmacy Wicker man awarded MBE
Sheffield pharmacy managing director Martin Bennett has been awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.The award is for services to pharmacy.The Associated Chemists (Wicker) MD studied pharmacy at Bradford University and then worked as a pharmacist at the Royal Hospital before moving to community pharmacies on Jersey and in Wales. He returned to Sheffield in 1973 to take up his current position.“This is a great honour for me personally,” said Mr Bennett, “but it should also be seen as recognition for the team at the Wicker and for my family, all of whom have been instrumental in enabling us to develop the Wicker Pharmacy and the Wicker Mobility Shop as centres of excellence.”Five years ago a new ring road forced the company to relocate, which led to the company investing more than £1million in an award-winning state-of-the-art premises including a robotic dispensing unit. Shortly after it was completed, the floods of 2007 caused major problems - but the pharmacy remained open and the damage was repaired.Mr Bennett was instrumental in setting up the pioneering coordinated pharmacy services for drug users in Sheffield, which was later adopted as a model for similar services in many other areas.Mr Bennett was received the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Silver Medal in 2004 and the Community Pharmacist of the Year award in 2006.
