GPhC appoints Gisela Abbam as new chair

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has appointed Gisela Abbam as its new chair, it has announced.

The Privy Council appointed Ms Abbam “after a robust selection process, which was scrutinised by the Professional Standards Authority”, the regulator wrote in an announcement this morning (February 16).

Ms Abbam will bring “a wealth of experience in delivering change in the health and life sciences sector” to her new role, which she will formally take on from March 14.

Previous roles

Before joining the GPhC, Ms Abbam was chair of the British Science Association, a role she took on in January 2019.

She also “worked in collaboration with governments, the World Health Organisation, the United Nations, and other multilateral organisations to improve health outcomes for people across the world”, the GPhC wrote.

Commenting on her appointment, Ms Abbam said she looks “forward to leading the council to achieve its vision of safe and effective pharmacy care at the heart of healthier communities”.

“COVID-19 highlighted the increased role of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacies in providing clinical services”, she continued.

“Effective standards and regulation can help pharmacy to provide more support to patients and the public at large,” she said.

Who is she succeeding?

Ms Abbam will take over from outgoing chair Nigel Clarke, who has completed his maximum term as chair, having been in the role since 2014.

“Gisela is joining the GPhC at an exciting time of major changes in both pharmacy and health regulation,” Mr Clarke said.

“I am sure her vast experience in healthcare will help the GPhC drive forward the aims set out in our Vision 2030”, he added, “and bring a real focus on the difference we want to make for patients and the public”.
